Design

Xiaomi shifted from the plastic build of the Redmi Note 2 to a metal case for the Note 3, adding a lot more prestige to the device which now feels and seems as the flagship it deserves to be.

Of course, the top and bottom caps are plastic, to allow for antenna reception.

Xiaomi CEO, Lei Jun, said that the metal case was indeed a design priority, aimed to add a smooth and premium touch. The Redmi Note 3 is 8.65mm at its thickest point and weighs 164 grams, making it fall to the category of medium weight cell phones.

Still, it could be a lot worse.

As for the Note 5, it follows the general guidelines of the previous Note smartphones, adding a little more size.

The one feature that makes the phone stand out among the competition – and influences the design up to a certain degree – is the S Pen Stylus, which made the company shape the inside based on that accessory. And of course, the metal and glass construction that is conducive to an overall classy exterior design.

Display

Since we’re talking phablets, both smartphones sport a large screen. More specifically, Xiaomi’s new phablet comes with a 5.5-inch screen, with a 1080p resolution (1080 x 1920 pixels) resulting to a pixel density of 401 ppi.

It may not be the best, but throughout this whole comparison the budget and technology used by Xiaomi are a major contributory factor to the resulting components that are used.

At the other corner of the ring, Samsung – still arguably the leader in the mobile display world – has equipped the Note 5 with a 5.7-inch display and a resolution of 2,560×1,440 pixels (518 pixels per inch).

Colours look fantastic, there’s enough density to make sure you’ll never see individual pixels, and the brightness available makes sure you can always see what’s on the screen.

Under the hood, the Redmi Note 3 is quite the same with the Note 2, which rolled out roughly three months ago. The main exception is the fingerprint sensor on the back, which, by the way, Xiaomi claims is able to unlock the phone in 0.3 seconds.

So, inside the Note 3, you’ll find a MediaTek Helio X10 MT6795 Octa-core, 2000 MHz, ARM Cortex-A53, 64-bit processor, a PowerVR G6200 GPU, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of on board storage. There is also a variant that comes with a 3GB RAM and 32GB of internal capacity, which will be priced at CNY 1,099 or $170.

The Note 5 features an Octa-core, 2100 MHz, ARM Cortex-A57 and ARM Cortex-A53, 64-bit processor with an Exynos 7 Octa 7420 system chip. In addition, the device has a 4GB of RAM and 32GB or 64GB of internal memory, depending on the variant you will go with.

The Dual LED 13MP camera found on the back of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 and the 5MP secondary one are good. But no detailed features or technologies used are disclosed to the public.

Yet, with the company’s budget and list of patents that they have at their services, it’s highly unlikely that the Redmi Note 3’s camera can stand up next to Samsung best phablet so far.

There actually isn’t much new to talk about with the Galaxy Note 5’s camera, but that’s because the imaging here is a known quantity — this is the same 16MP camera, lenses and OIS from the Galaxy S6.

On a relevant note, AndroidCentral says:

“The biggest changes are in the Pro mode, where you now have the option for RAW photo capture as well as manual shutter speed (between 1/24000 sec and 10 sec), in addition to the previous set of manual controls like focal point, white balance, ISO and EV. Those are two big features for photography enthusiasts, even though most people will just keep it in the Auto mode,”

Battery

Trying to improve the battery life, Xiaomi has put a 4000mAh battery inside the Redmi Note 3, which is significantly larger than the Redmi Note 2.

However, no official tests or benchmarks have run on the device to give us an accurate idea of what that means. Can the handset survive through a busy day with a single charge? Or does the bundle need to include a power bank as well?

The Note 5 sports a non-removable 3000mAh batter which, surprisingly, is enough to help the phone get through 17 hours of somewhat intense use – music streaming, taking pictures or video recording, interacting with social networks, etc.

Price

Xiaomi has set a goal to take on other companies by releasing flagship smartphones with peak performance at half the price – and sometimes even less. So, as such, the Redmi Note 3 starts at $140 or $170 for the 3GB RAM/32GB on board storage variant.

Starting at no less than $700 for the base model, the Galaxy Note 5 comes obviously multiple times pricier than the Redmi Note 3.

The Verdict

Comparing the Redmi Note 3 with the Note 5 is a matter of key points that you choose to compare.

Sure, the Note 5 is equipped with top of the class components but the price is unreachable for some, so perhaps the Redmi Note 3 is the most suited option, with powerful components and a very affordable price.
