Micromax has recently released the Canvas Xpress 4G and Canvas Blaze 4G Plus smartphones, so we put them head to head to figure out which one is the best fir for you.
Micromax, the Indian consumer electronics company headquartered in Gurgaon, entered the mobile handset business in 2000 and became one of the largest Indian domestic mobile handsets company operating in low-cost feature phone segments by 2010. But enough with the business history lessons.
Micromax launched one more 4G budget device. Previously we had around six 4G devices from Micromax, namely Canvas Knight 2, Sliver 5, Blaze 4G, Canvas Play 4G, Fire 4G, Nitro 4G E455 and now, a new addition will be made to the Blaze series- the Blaze 4G Plus, with model number Q414, will be the next entry to the 4G array of Micromax.
Another phone that falls close enough to the upcoming one mentioned above, is the Micromax Canvas Xpress.
But when those two handsets are put head to head, which one would you buy? Let’s dive head first to the specs and all the technical details of both phones and find out.
Design
The Micromax Canvas Xpress 4G sports a pretty generic design, featuring a removable plastic back panel with a chrome finish and the LED flash below seated between the protruding camera and the Micromax logo. Metallic-finish strips are placed on both sides; the right houses the Volume and Power buttons.
The square edges, block-like design and the weight, make the smartphone feel a tad chunky in the hand.
The upcoming Canvas Blaze 4G Plus, on the other hand, is noticeably smaller, with a bar design and not so square corners. It has a half metal-half polycarbonate plastic body. The screen-to-body ratio seems a bit off hand, but at least the phone is not as heavy as the contestant presented above.
Display
The 5-inch display of the Micromax Canvas Xpress 4G sports HD resolution (720×1280 pixels). Despite its relatively low quality – given that most rivals at the same category feature better quality and screen technologies – the screen does not appear too pixelated. However, its brightness levels sure seem to be rather low and that could eventually affect sunlight legibility.
Times of India, also reports reflectiveness as an additional problem, speaking of noticeable distortion of colours.
On the other side of the ring, the Canvas Blaze 4G comes with a half an inch smaller display (4.5 inches) and an even lower resolution of 480 x 854 pixels which leads to a pixel density of 218 PPI. Can’t really complain for neither of the handsets, though, as they both target lower price ranges than average.
Specs
Micromax may not have reached for the high-range of the smartphone market but works with decent components for every single one of its handsets.
The Canvas Xpress 4G is powered by a MediaTek MT6735P 1GHz quad-core processor and 2GB of RAM. The internal storage that offers is 16GB and it’s the only variant, so you won’t find 32GB or 64GB models. Still, if you feel like you could use some extra space, there is an option to expand up to 32GB with a microSD.
As for the Canvas Blaze 4G Plus, it features a Quad Core 1.1 GHz, Qualcomm Snapdragon 210 processor-MSM8909 processor, but no further details have been disclosed around the GPU.
However, judging by the technologies and components that Micromax uses on its devices – and the timeline of each release as well – we’d guess that the phone hides an Adreno 304 GPU just like the Q400 model that rolled out last month, on October. The 1GB RAM should be enough for moderate users, accompanied by the 8GB of inside memory. The option to expand up to 32GB with a microSD card remains here as well.
Camera
Things get a bit blurry when it comes to the camera and the technologies (or patents for that matter) on the grounds that Micromax does not publish any of its crucial information.
So all we know is that the Canvas Xpress 4G sports an 8MP rear shooter and a 2MP secondary camera. The Canvas Blaze 4G+, on the other hand, comes with the same selfie camera on the front but has a lower quality shooter on the back, at 5MP.
Price
An employee stands at the counter of Micromax mobile phones at a showroom in New Delhi December 6, 2013. REUTERS/Adnan Abidi/FilesThe Micromax Canvas Xpress 4G is considered a rarity in the sub Rs 7,000 segment, but not something unheard of.
On the other hand, thanks to Amar Aggarwal, we learned about the actual price of this phone which is Rs 10,999 before the official release.
Other key points to compare include the battery, only both devices hide a 2000mAh one under the hood. Also, it is worth mentioning that the Canvas Blaze supports a Dual-SIM system.
Which one to buy?
Both options are considered as a great opportunity price-wise, so there’s not much to analyse in that subject.
And the technical features as well, are not that far away. Of course, it is clear that the Canvas Xpress could offer a bit higher performance, but then again, the Canvas Blaze supports a Dual SIM system and, as the name suggests, it is also a 4G Plus network compatible, so there’s that.
Thus, the final decision could either be based on the negligible differences that the two smartphones come from, or the different design that may attract some more than others.
In any case, if you’re not depending from your smartphone to help you get through the day and all of the demanding tasks you need to complete, and you are simply in need of a decent handset to stay in touch with technology, then you’re on the right path.
