Smartphones worth Rs 90,000 Crore “Made In India” Last Fiscal

Mobile phones valued of Rs 90,000 Crore were created in the nation previous year, while imports of smartphones remained at $3.7 Billion (almost Rs 24,364 Crore) during the same period. This data was provided to the Parliament by the sources.

Being one of the biggest telecom markets internationally, India has seen manufacture of smartphones increase at a stable speed over the last couple of years.

“During 2014–2015, smartphones worth Rs 18,900 Crore were made in the country, which elevated to Rs 54,000 Crore in 2015–2016. It further elevated to Rs 90,000 Crore in 2016–2017,” said Manoj Sinha, the telecom minister, to the media in an interview at the Rajya Sabha. Local production of cellular mobile smartphones saw an expansion of 67% in 2016–2017 than 2015–2016 and 185% in terms of value in 2015–2016 than 2014–2015, he further said at the Rajya Sabha.

Sinha observed that during the cited time-frame, import of mobile smartphones dropped to 146 Million units (almost $6,059 Million) in 2015–2016 from 210 Million units (almost $7,948 Million) in 2014–2015. Imports additionally dropped to 76 Million units (almost $3,788 Million) in 2016–2017, he said at the Rajya Sabha.

The minister claimed that all major companies (both Indian and foreign) have either already arranged their own facilities for manufacturing or are in the procedure of doing the same. Some firms have also delegated production to Electronics Manufacturing Services (EMS) firms working from the Indian market.

These firms are situated in regions such as Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh. To market original manufacturing in the country, the government has rolled out different excise taxes on mobile smartphones in the 2015–2016 Union budget, Sinha claimed to the media at the Rajya Sabha.

“The Government of India has informed the Phased Manufacturing Programme (PMP) to market native manufacturing of mobile smartphones and its sub-legislative bodies. Basic Customs Duty (BCD) of 10% has been applied on identified parts and mobile smartphone thereof,” he further added.
